Randy Newberg has been applying for a Montana Shiras Moose tag for 30 years. Finally after three decades he drew one of the four tags that are given out in this specific unit. He has been hunting the area for elk for the last few days, but now it's time to transition from elk to moose.
While this is an extremely difficult tag to draw, that certainly doesn't mean it's going to be a cakewalk of a hunt. The densities of moose are low in this area so the strategy is going to be to just continue to cover country and glass good looking moose habitat.
Randy explores the unit and marks good look areas on his GPS to keep returning to as the bulls start to move as the rut kicks in. Hopefully with any luck and enough time he can find a bull moose that he is happy to hang his tag on.
